Why Some Top-Ups Need a Physical Tap to Activate
If you top up without NFC — through the RTA website, WhatsApp, DubaiNow, or a bank app — your new balance sits in a pending state for 45 minutes to 4 hours. It won’t appear on the physical card until you tap it at one of these readers: a metro gate, bus gate, tram card reader, bus validator, solar top-up machine, or parking meter.
Skipping this step is the most common reason a top-up “hasn’t shown up” — the payment went through, but the card itself hasn’t been updated yet.
Recharging with nol Pay, RTA Dubai, or S’hail over NFC skips this entirely: the second tap against your phone during checkout writes the balance straight to the card.
Recharge Your Nol Card Online
Via the nol Pay App (Instant)
Download nol Pay — App Store / Google Play — RTA’s own NFC-based app for managing a nol card:
- Open the app and select Top Up.
- Hold your card against your phone to link it (NFC).
- Enter your top-up amount (AED 5 minimum) and tap Pay.
- Enter your card details and pay.
- Tap your card against your phone again to complete the top-up.

- Go to RTA’s nol top-up page and select Public Transport > Top up nol card.

Via Your Bank (App, ATM, or CDM)
Several UAE banks — including Emirates NBD, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), and Emirates Islamic — let you top up a nol card through their mobile banking app, and some also support it directly at an ATM or Cash Deposit Machine (CDM): Emirates NBD, for example, offers nol top-ups through its mobile app, online banking, ATMs, and CDMs. These typically carry an extra AED 1 fee on top of the recharge amount, and need a physical activation tap like the other non-NFC channels. Check your own bank’s app or nearest branch to confirm current availability, since bank integrations can change.

Nol Card Passes: An Alternative to Topping Up Cash Balance
If you commute daily, a period pass can be cheaper than paying per trip. Passes are available for 7, 30, 90, and 365 days, across Silver, Gold, Student, and Senior/Emirati card tiers, priced by how many fare zones you need. Silver-card prices for a single zone:

If you’re using a digital nol card through nol Pay:

Your balance updates instantly in the app — there’s no physical card to tap. Huawei and Samsung users can also add a virtual nol card directly to their phone’s wallet.
What’s Changing: RTA’s Digital Ticketing Upgrade
RTA is in the middle of a multi-year overhaul of how nol cards work, moving toward an “account-based ticketing” system. As of recent reporting, the project is roughly 72% complete, with full rollout expected around Q1 2027.
Once finished, it’s expected to let you link your nol card to a personal digital account, use next-generation cards aligned with global payment standards, and pay directly with bank cards, digital wallets, or QR codes alongside the classic nol card. None of this changes how you recharge today — the methods above are all still current.
