To renew a Nepali passport in the UAE, complete the online pre-enrollment on the Department of Passports portal, book a slot, then appear in person at the Nepali Consulate in Dubai or the Embassy in Abu Dhabi with your old passport, citizenship copy and exact cash. The standard 34-page e-Passport costs AED 200 and usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to arrive.
Nepal no longer renews Machine Readable Passports. Every renewal now produces a biometric e-Passport with an embedded chip, which is why you have to attend in person to give your photo, fingerprints and iris scan. This guide covers the fees, documents, online steps, which mission serves your emirate, and how to avoid a residence visa problem while you wait.
Quick Summary: Fees, Processing Time and Online Portal
- Online portal: online.nepalpassport.gov.np (Department of Passports)
- Standard renewal: AED 200 for 34 pages, AED 400 for 66 pages, cash only
- Lost or damaged replacement: AED 300 (34 pages) or AED 600 (66 pages)
- Child under 10: AED 100
- Turnaround: about 3 to 4 weeks, up to 6 weeks during backlogs, because passports are printed in Kathmandu
- Where to apply: Dubai Consulate or Abu Dhabi Embassy, depending on your emirate
When to Renew: The 6-Month Rule
UAE immigration expects at least six months of validity left on your passport when you renew a residence visa or travel internationally. If yours is inside that window, apply now. Because printing happens in Nepal, a passport that is still pending when your visa comes up for renewal can hold up the visa, and staying past the visa’s end date adds daily fines. The current rate and how to clear it are covered in our guide to UAE visa overstay fines.
Documents You Need
Standard renewal
- Original passport
- Copy of your Nepali citizenship certificate (Nagarikta), both sides
- Copy of your UAE visa
- The printed application form with its barcode or QR slip from the online portal
- Exact fee in UAE dirhams, in cash
Lost or damaged passport
You need a UAE police loss report on top of the standard documents, and the higher AED 300 or AED 600 fee applies.
Children under 10 or born in the UAE
The fee is AED 100 and the child must attend in person like any other applicant. Check your mission’s passport service page for the exact supporting documents before you go, as requirements for minors differ from adults.
How to Apply for an e-Passport Online

Step 1: Complete the pre-enrollment form
Go to the official portal, choose passport renewal, pick the 34-page or 66-page booklet, and fill in your details. Double-check every field against your citizenship certificate and current passport. Applying online is free, so avoid typing centres that charge you to “book” an appointment.
Step 2: Book your mission appointment
Choose the Dubai Consulate or the Abu Dhabi Embassy and select an available date and time.
Step 3: Print the form and barcode slip
Download or print the confirmation with its barcode. You will need it at the counter.
Attending Your Appointment: Dubai or Abu Dhabi
Every applicant, of any age, must appear in person for a digital photo, ten fingerprints, an iris scan and an electronic signature. Which mission you use depends on where you live.

Fees are set by the Nepali government and can change, so confirm them on the Dubai Consulate passport service page before you go.
Tracking and Collecting Your New e-Passport
Your passport is printed at the Department of Passports in Kathmandu and couriered to the UAE mission, which takes roughly 3 to 4 weeks. Both missions publish a list of passports ready for distribution on their websites and Facebook pages, so watch there rather than calling. To collect, bring your original payment receipt and your old passport, which is cancelled and returned to you.
After you have the new passport, remember to update it on your other records, including your Emirates ID and other identity documents.
If Your Passport Expires Before Your Visa Renewal
Start the renewal as early as you can, ideally as soon as validity drops under six months. If you need to leave urgently, the missions issue a one-way travel document to Nepal for AED 200. If your employer is holding your passport, know that withholding a worker’s passport is illegal under UAE law, and the Dubai Consulate has reminded employers that they must release it for renewal.
