Who Can Cancel a UAE Residence Visa?

How to Cancel Your UAE Visa: Step-by-Step
Option 1: Cancel Online via ICP Smart Services (Outside Dubai)
- Visit the ICP Smart Services website.
- Select Public Visa Service from the main menu.
- Choose Cancellation of Current Visa.
- Enter your passport number, passport type, date of birth, and nationality, then search.
- Submit the required documents digitally — your passport number and a scanned copy (you won’t need to hand over the physical passport; see Documents below), and for investors/partners, a trade-licence cancellation certificate, or in case of death, a death certificate.
- Pay the fee by credit or debit card.
- You’ll be notified once the cancellation is processed — typically within about 48 hours if your documents are correct.
Option 2: Cancel via GDRFA-Dubai App, DubaiNow, or an Amer Centre (Dubai)
- Download the GDRFA-Dubai Smart App or the DubaiNow app (DubaiNow’s “Manage Residency” section can also handle a family member’s cancellation), or visit an Amer typing centre in person.
- Log in (or take a queue ticket at the centre) and select the residence-permit cancellation service.
- Submit the sponsor’s and sponsored person’s passport details and scanned copies, and — for private-sector employees — a work-permit cancellation extract from MOHRE (see the employment-visa section below).

Option 3: Cancel via an Accredited Typing Centre
An accredited typing centre can fill out and submit your cancellation form on your behalf for either GDRFA or ICP cases. You’ll pay the same government fee as above, plus the centre’s own service charge, which varies by centre.

Its “Cancellation of all types of residence permits” service page states a clean, complete AED 120 government fee with no Amer add-on mentioned.
Its separate FAQ/cost page instead frames AED 190/290 as a “base fee” with additional, unspecified “Amer Center Fees” layered on top — which would make an Amer-centre cancellation cost more than 290, not have 290 already include Amer’s charge. These two GDRFA pages don’t reconcile with each other, so treat both figures as unconfirmed until you check directly with GDRFA or an Amer centre before paying.

Since the UAE discontinued physical passport visa stamps in 2022, cancellation is a fully digital process — you submit your passport and Emirates ID numbers with scanned copies through Amer, ICP Smart Services, or a typing centre. Cancelling a UAE Work (Employment) Visa

As part of that step, you (the employee) generally need to sign the MOHRE cancellation form acknowledging you’ve received your final entitlements and gratuity before it can proceed — MOHRE only skips this signature in specific exceptions (you’re outside the UAE, have a contagious disease, are deceased, or the cancellation is administrative). Once MOHRE issues the work-permit cancellation extract, your employer (or you, at a typing centre) uses it to cancel your residence visa via GDRFA or ICP as described above.
Cancelling a Domestic Worker’s Visa (Maid, Nanny, or Driver)
Domestic workers don’t go through the standard MOHRE private-sector path — their visas are sponsored and cancelled through Tadbeer centres, the government-mandated service providers for domestic worker affairs.
Cancellation costs roughly AED 250 if the worker is still inside the UAE, or around AED 264 if they’ve already been outside the country for 3 or more months. Tadbeer also offers a “door to door” service that collects your documents without a centre visit.
Cancelling a UAE Family (Dependent) Visa
A family visa is cancelled through an authorized typing centre, directly at GDRFA/ICP, or — for Dubai-sponsored dependents — through the DubaiNow app’s “Manage Residency” section. The sponsor initiates it. If you’re the sponsor of more than one dependent, cancel each dependent’s visa before your own. Family-visa cancellations are typically processed within about 24–48 hours once submitted correctly.
Cancelling a Tourist, Student, or Investor Visa
Tourist visas and other short-term entry permits usually don’t need to be actively cancelled — if you don’t plan to use or extend one, you can simply let it expire rather than pay a cancellation fee.
Student visas are different. A student residence visa is a formal residency permit tied to a sponsoring UAE educational institution, and it must be actively cancelled through that institution’s own procedures. Leaving it to lapse instead of formally cancelling it can get you reported as an absconder — blocking you from entering or exiting the UAE (and other GCC countries) on any future visa, and adding an absconder-removal fee on top of whatever you already owed.
Investor visa holders can self-submit their own cancellation, the same as above, through a typing centre or directly online via ICP or GDRFA.
Your Grace Period After Visa Cancellation
Once your cancellation is approved, you get a grace period to either apply for a new visa or leave the UAE. It is not the same 30 days for everyone — ICP’s own current rules set it by category:

What If You Overstay Your Grace Period?
Once your grace period ends, you’re in overstay, and the daily fine is currently AED 50 per day. At that point, you can’t simply board a flight — you’ll need to obtain an Exit Permit (also called an “out pass”) from GDRFA or ICP before you’re allowed to leave. Any accumulated overstay fines have to be cleared first; the permit is only issued once they’re settled. If fines go unpaid, authorities can still issue an exit permit under “permanent deprivation,” which bars you from re-entering the UAE in future.
What Happens If You’re Outside the UAE for 6 Months?
If you stay outside the UAE for around 180 days (roughly 6 consecutive months), your residence visa is typically cancelled automatically. Golden Visa holders and their families are exempt — they can remain abroad indefinitely without it affecting their residency. Everyone else has an alternative to losing their visa outright: ICP’s re-entry permit service, applied for online via ICP Smart Services before you exceed the limit, which requires stating your reason for the extended absence and takes about 5 business days to approve. Without a re-entry permit, once the visa lapses you’ll need to cancel it (if it hasn’t already been cancelled automatically) and apply for a new one to come back.
My Employer Won’t Cancel My Visa — What Can I Do?
