Cancelling a UAE residence visa goes through one of two authorities depending on where it was issued — GDRFA if it’s a Dubai visa, or ICP for every other emirate — and costs roughly AED 70–150 in government fees depending on the route.
The grace period you get afterward isn’t one fixed number either: it ranges from 30 to 180 days depending on your visa category. Since 2022, the whole process is digital — you won’t need to hand over your physical passport. Here’s exactly how to cancel, what it costs, and how long you can legally stay after.
Who Can Cancel a UAE Residence Visa?
Your sponsor cancels your residence visa in the UAE — that’s your employer for a work visa, or the primary visa holder for a dependent/family visa. If you hold an investor or partner visa, you can submit the cancellation yourself.
GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (Other Emirates) — Which One Do You Use?
There isn’t one national visa-cancellation portal. Which authority handles your cancellation depends on where your visa was actually processed, not where you currently live.
| If your visa was issued in… | Use this authority | Official channel |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai) | GDRFA-Dubai Smart App, DubaiNow app, or an Amer typing centre |
| Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah | ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) | ICP Smart Services website/app, or an accredited typing centre |
If you’re sponsoring family members on a UAE dependent visa, cancel their visas before cancelling your own.
How to Cancel Your UAE Visa: Step-by-Step
Option 1: Cancel Online via ICP Smart Services (Outside Dubai)
- Visit the ICP Smart Services website.
- Select Public Visa Service from the main menu.
- Choose Cancellation of Current Visa.
- Enter your passport number, passport type, date of birth, and nationality, then search.
- Submit the required documents digitally — your passport number and a scanned copy (you won’t need to hand over the physical passport; see Documents below), and for investors/partners, a trade-licence cancellation certificate, or in case of death, a death certificate.
- Pay the fee by credit or debit card.
- You’ll be notified once the cancellation is processed — typically within about 48 hours if your documents are correct.
Option 2: Cancel via GDRFA-Dubai App, DubaiNow, or an Amer Centre (Dubai)
- Download the GDRFA-Dubai Smart App or the DubaiNow app (DubaiNow’s “Manage Residency” section can also handle a family member’s cancellation), or visit an Amer typing centre in person.
- Log in (or take a queue ticket at the centre) and select the residence-permit cancellation service.
- Submit the sponsor’s and sponsored person’s passport details and scanned copies, and — for private-sector employees — a work-permit cancellation extract from MOHRE (see the employment-visa section below).
- Pay the fee.
- Submit the application — expected processing time is around 48 hours.
Option 3: Cancel via an Accredited Typing Centre
An accredited typing centre can fill out and submit your cancellation form on your behalf for either GDRFA or ICP cases. You’ll pay the same government fee as above, plus the centre’s own service charge, which varies by centre.
UAE Visa Cancellation Fees
| Scenario | Authority | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Residence visa cancellation (Dubai) | GDRFA | AED 100 + AED 10 Knowledge Dirham + AED 10 Innovation Dirham = AED 120, per GDRFA’s residence-cancellation service page. GDRFA’s own separate FAQ/cost page instead lists AED 190 (inside country) / AED 290 (outside country) for an individual as a “base fee,” with additional unspecified Amer Center Fees on top — see note below. |
| Entry permit / pre-residency visa cancellation (Dubai, sponsored person still in the country) | GDRFA | AED 50 + AED 10 Knowledge + AED 10 Innovation = AED 70 |
| Residence visa cancellation (other emirates) | ICP | AED 50 application + AED 100 Smart Services = AED 150. An “exceptional” cancellation adds AED 100 more. |
| Sponsor-initiated cancellation without the sponsored person’s consent | ICP | AED 5,000 guarantee fee + AED 20 deposit |
| Domestic worker (maid/nanny/driver) visa | Tadbeer | Roughly AED 250 in-country, AED 264 if the worker has been outside the UAE 3+ months — see Domestic Worker section below |
| Via a typing centre (either authority) | GDRFA or ICP | Same government fee above, plus the centre’s own service charge (varies by centre) |
Open item:
GDRFA publishes two different figures for the same Dubai residence-permit cancellation on two of its own pages.
Its “Cancellation of all types of residence permits” service page states a clean, complete AED 120 government fee with no Amer add-on mentioned.
Its separate FAQ/cost page instead frames AED 190/290 as a “base fee” with additional, unspecified “Amer Center Fees” layered on top — which would make an Amer-centre cancellation cost more than 290, not have 290 already include Amer’s charge. These two GDRFA pages don’t reconcile with each other, so treat both figures as unconfirmed until you check directly with GDRFA or an Amer centre before paying.
Documents Required for Visa Cancellation
Since the UAE discontinued physical passport visa stamps in 2022, cancellation is a fully digital process — you submit your passport and Emirates ID numbers with scanned copies through Amer, ICP Smart Services, or a typing centre. You do not need to hand over your original physical passport or Emirates ID card.
- Passport number and a scanned copy (sponsor’s and sponsored person’s, where applicable)
- Emirates ID number
- For private-sector employees: work-permit cancellation extract from MOHRE, with the employee’s signed acknowledgement of final entitlements (see below)
- For investors/partners: trade-licence cancellation certificate
- Death certificate, if the visa holder is deceased
- Any bank no-liability letter or additional document your specific sponsor, bank, or typing centre requests — this varies by case, so confirm the exact list for your situation via GDRFA/ICP Smart Services or your typing centre before you go.
Cancelling a UAE Work (Employment) Visa
Cancelling an employment visa starts with your work permit, not the residence visa itself. Your employer requests the work-permit cancellation through MOHRE first — see our UAE Work Permit guide for exactly how that works and what it costs.
As part of that step, you (the employee) generally need to sign the MOHRE cancellation form acknowledging you’ve received your final entitlements and gratuity before it can proceed — MOHRE only skips this signature in specific exceptions (you’re outside the UAE, have a contagious disease, are deceased, or the cancellation is administrative). Once MOHRE issues the work-permit cancellation extract, your employer (or you, at a typing centre) uses it to cancel your residence visa via GDRFA or ICP as described above.
Cancelling a Domestic Worker’s Visa (Maid, Nanny, or Driver)
Domestic workers don’t go through the standard MOHRE private-sector path — their visas are sponsored and cancelled through Tadbeer centres, the government-mandated service providers for domestic worker affairs.
Cancellation costs roughly AED 250 if the worker is still inside the UAE, or around AED 264 if they’ve already been outside the country for 3 or more months. Tadbeer also offers a “door to door” service that collects your documents without a centre visit.
Cancelling a UAE Family (Dependent) Visa
A family visa is cancelled through an authorized typing centre, directly at GDRFA/ICP, or — for Dubai-sponsored dependents — through the DubaiNow app’s “Manage Residency” section. The sponsor initiates it. If you’re the sponsor of more than one dependent, cancel each dependent’s visa before your own. Family-visa cancellations are typically processed within about 24–48 hours once submitted correctly.
Cancelling a Tourist, Student, or Investor Visa
Tourist visas and other short-term entry permits usually don’t need to be actively cancelled — if you don’t plan to use or extend one, you can simply let it expire rather than pay a cancellation fee.
Student visas are different. A student residence visa is a formal residency permit tied to a sponsoring UAE educational institution, and it must be actively cancelled through that institution’s own procedures. Leaving it to lapse instead of formally cancelling it can get you reported as an absconder — blocking you from entering or exiting the UAE (and other GCC countries) on any future visa, and adding an absconder-removal fee on top of whatever you already owed.
Investor visa holders can self-submit their own cancellation, the same as above, through a typing centre or directly online via ICP or GDRFA.
Your Grace Period After Visa Cancellation
Once your cancellation is approved, you get a grace period to either apply for a new visa or leave the UAE. It is not the same 30 days for everyone — ICP’s own current rules set it by category:
| Grace Period | Who It Applies To |
|---|---|
| 180 days | Golden/Green residency holders and their families; widows/divorcees of foreign residents; post-graduation students sponsored by a UAE institution; top-tier (level 1–2) skilled professionals |
| 90 days | Skilled workers (levels 1–3); property owners |
| 60 days | Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host |
| 30 days | All other/standard categories |
To check your own exact allowed-stay date rather than estimate from the table above, see our guide to checking your grace period in the UAE online. You can also confirm your cancellation actually went through with our guide to checking your UAE visa status online.
What If You Overstay Your Grace Period?
Once your grace period ends, you’re in overstay, and the daily fine is currently AED 50 per day. At that point, you can’t simply board a flight — you’ll need to obtain an Exit Permit (also called an “out pass”) from GDRFA or ICP before you’re allowed to leave. Any accumulated overstay fines have to be cleared first; the permit is only issued once they’re settled. If fines go unpaid, authorities can still issue an exit permit under “permanent deprivation,” which bars you from re-entering the UAE in future.
What Happens If You’re Outside the UAE for 6 Months?
If you stay outside the UAE for around 180 days (roughly 6 consecutive months), your residence visa is typically cancelled automatically. Golden Visa holders and their families are exempt — they can remain abroad indefinitely without it affecting their residency. Everyone else has an alternative to losing their visa outright: ICP’s re-entry permit service, applied for online via ICP Smart Services before you exceed the limit, which requires stating your reason for the extended absence and takes about 5 business days to approve. Without a re-entry permit, once the visa lapses you’ll need to cancel it (if it hasn’t already been cancelled automatically) and apply for a new one to come back.
My Employer Won’t Cancel My Visa — What Can I Do?
If your employer is refusing or delaying your visa cancellation, you can escalate directly to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), which handles disputes between employees and employers over exactly this kind of issue.
Cancelling a Family Member’s Visa From Outside the UAE
If your sponsored family member holds a UAE visa but isn’t currently in the country, you as the sponsor can still submit the cancellation documents on their behalf through an accredited typing centre. If you need to double-check your file or visa number to start the process, see our guide to finding your UAE visa number online.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to cancel a UAE visa?
Typically AED 70–150 in government fees depending on the authority and scenario, plus a typing centre’s own service charge if you use one. Dubai’s GDRFA publishes two different figures for the same service (AED 120 on one page, AED 190/290 plus Amer fees on another) that we haven’t been able to fully reconcile — confirm directly with GDRFA or an Amer centre if you need an exact number.
What is the grace period after UAE visa cancellation?
It’s tiered by visa category: 30 days for standard cases, 60 days for guarantor/host-sponsored permits, 90 days for skilled workers (levels 1–3) and property owners, and 180 days for Golden/Green visa holders, widows/divorcees, sponsored students, and top-tier skilled professionals.
Do I need original documents to cancel my UAE visa?
No. Since the UAE discontinued physical passport visa stamps in 2022, cancellation is fully digital — you submit your passport and Emirates ID numbers with scanned copies, not the physical originals.
Can I just let my tourist or student visa expire instead of cancelling it?
For a tourist visa, yes — it can simply expire. A student visa is different: it must be formally cancelled through your sponsoring institution, or you risk being reported as an absconder, which can block future entry to the UAE and other GCC countries.
What happens if I don’t return to the UAE for 6 months?
Your residence visa is typically cancelled automatically after around 180 days outside the country. Golden Visa holders are exempt and can stay away indefinitely. Everyone else can apply for an ICP re-entry permit in advance to avoid losing their visa.
What if my employer won’t cancel my work visa?
Contact MOHRE directly — they handle disputes between employees and employers, including delayed or refused visa cancellations. Note that you’ll typically need to sign MOHRE’s cancellation form yourself, acknowledging your final entitlements, before the process can complete.
How do I cancel a domestic worker’s (maid/nanny/driver) visa?
Through a Tadbeer centre, not the standard MOHRE private-sector process — domestic workers are sponsored and cancelled under a separate system. It costs roughly AED 250 in-country or AED 264 if the worker has already been outside the UAE for 3+ months.
What happens if I overstay my grace period?
You’ll be charged AED 50 per day in overstay fines, and you’ll need to obtain an Exit Permit from GDRFA or ICP — which is only issued once those fines are settled — before you can legally leave the UAE.
